Why a Local Lottery?
Horsforth is a place where people know their neighbours, support their high street, and show up for their community. The Horsforth Local Lottery was created to strengthen all of that. It is a simple idea: a monthly lottery where every penny of the prize fund is paid out in Horsforth Pounds (H£), a local currency that can only be spent at participating businesses in the area.
The result is a virtuous circle. Ticket sales generate prize money. Winners spend their prizes locally. That spending supports the shops, pubs, restaurants, and cafes that make Horsforth what it is. And 20% of every draw goes directly to local charities, community groups, and good causes.
Horsforth Town Team
The lottery is promoted and managed by Horsforth Town Team C.I.C. (Company No. 14868791, registered in England and Wales), a volunteer group of local residents and business owners who work to improve the area for everyone. The Town Team runs events, campaigns for local improvements, and supports initiatives that keep Horsforth thriving. The lottery is one of their flagship projects, developed to encourage people to spend locally and to create a reliable funding stream for community causes.
The Horsforth Local Lottery is fully licenced by Leeds City Council. All operations, prize distributions, and financial records are managed transparently by a dedicated subcommittee of the Town Team.
The Horsforth Pound (H£)
The Horsforth Pound is the local currency at the heart of the lottery. All prizes are paid exclusively in H£ notes, which can be spent at any participating business in Horsforth. There is no cash alternative. This is deliberate: it ensures that every pound won flows back into the local economy rather than leaving the area.
H£ notes work like vouchers. You can use them in as many different businesses as you like, spending as many or as few as you choose in each transaction. The one rule is that no change in sterling can be given for a Horsforth Pound, so each note must be spent in full in a single transaction. Winnings must be spent within three months of the draw, though extensions can be requested in writing.
When a business receives Horsforth Pounds, they contact the lottery team to arrange collection. The equivalent amount in sterling is then transferred directly to the business bank account. It is a clean, simple system that keeps money circulating locally.
